About -> About Google Adwords
Google Adwords is the name for Google's Pay-Per-Click advertising program. Let's break that down for a second:
- Google - this runs on Google, and a network of sites that Google is the search engine source for.
- Advertising - these are ads. You write them. You control the copy. They are a marketing tool.
- Pay-per-click - as the "sponsor" of these ads, you do pay for them. But you only pay if someone clicks on them! What a concept! Only if someone is interested to click the ad and visit your website do you pay a cent. After wasting hundreds of dollars on print ads and mailers, finding Adwords was a relief to me. No matter if anyone saw my ad, or was interested, I still had to pay for those old print ads.
Before we get any further, I guess you might want to see what these Adwords ads look like. This link will open a new window. It's the result of me searching Google for counselors in Dallas on a night in March, 2009.
Google Adwords is a complex and powerful advertising system. There is lots of control, such as:
- In what parts of the US (or world) your ad is seen.
- What search terms (keywords) trigger your ad to be seen.
- What ad is seen - you can have customized ads for different searches.
- There are ways to have dynamic ad copy - responding to the search terms.
- There are even ways to have multiple ads running against the same search term, and you can "test market" different ad copy.
- You can stop your ad from showing if certain other words are in the search (such as "free", like "free counseling" - or perhaps any particular diagnoses you do not want to work with).
- You can decided a budget for ads for the day (your ads stop showing after the budget is used up).
- You can intersperse your ads throughout the day, or have it show every time until the budget is used up.
- You can pause your ads, for a day, a month, or a year - with no charge.
- You can even do some things I rarely do, such as only have ads show up certain days of the week, or certain times of day (I have not yet used this for therapists).
Lots of power, and lots of complexity. This is why it's useful to use someone who knows the system well.
There are two main ways you can go wrong with Adwords: you can spend a LOT of money on clicks (and end up with no new clients), or you can have an ad that is never seen. My specialty is setting up well-running, customized Adwords campaigns for therapists, counselors, psychologists, and other helpers and healers in private practice. My aim is to help you grow your client base.
