Web Terms
- Browser - the browser is the computer program you run that reads web pages. It might be Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Apple's Safari, or something more adventurous like Firefox or Opera.
- Domain - your domain is simply your website's name. The domain here is YourGoogleGuy.com.
- Domain Forwarding - you can set up something so that a person types in one name, like PeterHannah.com, and they end up at another one, like ChangingForGood.com (try it). This can also be done so that the real domain is hidden (something you might want to do if you are using free web hosting, or your home account).
- Email Forwarding - sort of like domain forwarding. You can have an email account (like peter@peterhannah.com) that forwards into another one automatically. This can be useful if you are using your home email account.
- Flash - Flash is an advanced and specialized kind of web technology. It makes cool, animated web pages.
- GIF "pronounced Giff" - A GIF file is actually named for the file extension .gif. This is a particular kind of image file. Usually it's used for things that have large areas of the same color. My YourGoogleGuy banner is a .gif file.
- Host - another name for your ISP. This is the company who actually puts your web pages onto the Internet.
- HTML - HyperText Markup Language. It's what web pages are actually written in :-)
- IP address - underneath all these names (like CNN.com), it's all translated into numbers that look like this: 202.163.22.1. That's an IP address. No real reason for you to know this.
- ISP - Internet Service Provider, another name for your host.
- JPG "pronounced Jay-peg" A JPG (or JPEG) file is another particular kind of image file. It is mostly used for photographs, or other photo-like images, since it describes images pixel by pixel.
- PDF - Portable Document Format. This is a well-liked format for saving text documents, since you can make them look beautiful, but not allow users to edit them. Made with Adobe Acrobat. Read using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- Server - a large computer used by ISPs/Hosts to house lots of web pages.
- URL - a web page address. Includes a domain, but can include more. www.changingforgood.com/aboutme.htm is an example of a URL.
- URL Forwarding - see Domain Forwarding (it's the same thing).
Best! Peter
